Jenn, standing ovation for your recap! And everybody for the first Bookie Cast! It was so good, it felt like it was only 10 minutes long.
Yes, we do need a Terry Goodkind track at Dragon*Con. Let’s talk
I learned about the books because of the TV show, but by the time the second season of “Legend of the Seeker” aired, I had read all the books and was completely in love with the series. I read some of the books multiple times, and I remember reading “Confessor”, the last book of the series in 3 days because I just could not put it down. This is my 4th or 5th read for Wizard First Rule.
What I loved about ch. 1-8:
- The first sentence: “It was an odd looking vine”. The way Terry Goodkind starts all his books is just so incredible, I can’t put words to it.
- All the details of the surroundings. You know how Westland looks like, what the Upper Ven looks like, or Hartland. I have a clear picture in my head of what Richard’s rainsacked house looks like, what a wayward pine looks like, feels like and smells like, and the blue jar with the messages from George Cypher, and even the invisible wizard cabinet in Zedd’s house. Like Jenn said, just the right amount of details, so your mind does the rest. Only a gifted writer can do that. Just beautiful!!
- We get a glimpse of the main characters with their personalities, their minds, their beliefs, their fears, their secrets, and what they look like.
- We hear “Bags!” and “True as toasted toads” for the first time. Love it.
When I go back to the books, Richard and Kahlan don’t look like Bridget and Craig. May be it’s because Terry Goodkind gives us such a good description of what the main characters look like. Or it could be because of beautiful book covers. I agree Zedd is the exception. Bruce is Zedd and even more. While I’m re-reading ‘Wizard First Rule’ every time Zedd speaks in the book, I can hear Bruce Spence’s voice in my head.
Thank you for a fantastic bookie cast.

Excellent podcast guys!
Jenn’s recap was amazing. I saw the scenes in my head with effortless flow, it’s like “dancing with recaps” hehe *nudge* *wink*
I kinda feel bad for myself because of what Kurt said. I was a LOTS fan before a bookie, so the mystery of what a Confessor is was lost for me. But it doesn’t take anything away from how great WFR is.
The thing I love about the book is how the characters interact with the world they’re in and with each other. I love that they cook, they carry packs and bedrolls, they get a bit self-conscious when their clothes are dirty… it just makes them so real to me.
In chapters 1-8, the thing that stood out for me was Kahlan’s special smile. Her special smile gets me every time. Knowing her background and all the things she’s been through. Her silent sorrow for being a confessor and realizing the things she cannot allow to be part of her life… That special smile holds so much meaning for me. It’s just so tragic and poignant but beautiful and full of hope at the same time. Oh! I just… *dead*
Also, I decided to get a hold of audio book versions for this book club of ours just to see how it’s like for Kevin. I tell you, it’s awesome. It’s like watching a movie but not really. I also love that I could do other stuff while “reading” a book. Hehe. Plus, the version I got has a great voice talent, he even makes the D’Haran’s have a Russian accent.
Thank you for a great time guys. Looking forward to next week’s podcast. More power and may the Good Spirits be with you.
